Ticket Giveaway: MoMA's Annual Film Benefit Afterparty

Kathryn Bigelow on set. Photo by Jonathan Olley

On Wednesday, November 10th, the Annual Film Benefit at the MoMA will be honoring Kathryn Bigelow– best known for making history as the first woman to win an Oscar in the Best Director category for her film, The Hurt Locker. Or some of you may know her from a little number called Point Break. Either way the lady deserves a party or two.

That said, the MoMA will be hosting an afterparty immediately following the benefit gala with a special acoustic performance by Metric as well as a DJ set by Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. At $100 a pop, and the promise of an open bar (man, museums really do throw the best shindigs), these are the hottest tickets in town… and we’ve got a pair to give to one lucky reader. It’s as simple commenting below!

Vaya Con Dios! <— I just couldn’t resist.

Giveaway: Parts & Labor Prize Pack, at Glasslands on 10/15

Parts & Labor come to Glasslands on October 15th with Shy Child, Adult Themes, and Bunnies to debut some of their new material, set to release on an upcoming album early 2011 and since we love these guys so much and want to make sure you check out the live show (which happens to be stellar), we’re giving away a little prize pack.

By little I mean Parts & Labor’s entire catalog w/ Jagjaguwar, which consists of three albums– Stay Afraid, Mapmaker, and Receivers. To make it extra sweet Jagjaguwar will throw in some cool posters and other random stuff laying around the office.

Take a listen to “Nowhere’s Nigh“, comment below for your chance to win, and check out the live video for “Wedding In A Wasteland” after the jump…

Tickets to the Glasslands show are $8 and are on sale HERE.

Ticket Giveaway: Here We Go Magic at Bowery Ballroom

Earlier this summer, Here We Go Magic released Pigeons– a record heavy in a certain new wave dreaminess and experimental twang, like the opening line of the album’s first single, “Collector”, which succeeds in almost fooling us into believing we’re listening to a Fiery Furnaces song until, of course, a third syllable breaks loose.

It’s a bit of a different sound from what we’re used to hearing from the folk-infused orchestral pop favorites, but we’re not disappointed. And considering the first LP was recorded by Luke Temple all on his own before setting a full band in concrete, we’re not surprised either. Here We Go Magic are on a road to discovery, holding hands united down a path of decisions that will surely lead to a sound which grows with each release. Personally, we’re excited for them, not to mention ourselves as we reap the benefits of a band that’s nothing less than extraordinarily capable.

Besides, everyone I know is still pretty obsessed with “Fangela” so at least there’s a worst scenario.

Here We Go Magic will be playing with The Love Language at Bowery Ballroom on October 13th and we’ve got a pair of tickets for one lucky reader! Just comment below for your chance to win, and be sure to check out the video for “Collector” after the jump…

Ticket Giveaway: Oh Land at Littlefield

Remember back in June when we told you about Oh Land? Shortly after she played an amazing swell of songs at our Northside Festival showcase at Brooklyn Bowl to an unsuspecting crowd. Well, since then the Danish native has received rave reviews from pretty much everybody– from Nylon to Vogue, even becoming the face of M Missoni. How’s that for star power?

With her dreamy pop soundscapes and endearingly off-kilter stage presence, Oh Land is truly captivating. Howling intonations and crackling electro hooks have the power to transfix, while songs such as “Wolf & I” take you cautiously by the wrist affirming each track can be trusted. We longingly await the self-titled EP out in October on Epic Records, followed by a full-length debut in early 2011.

Luckily for you, this pretty little bird of song will be playing at Littlefield in Gowanus tomorrow night with Chicago’s Unicycle Loves You and Frances. And we wouldn’t be FREEwiliamsburg if we didn’t have a pair of tickets to giveaway to one of our favorite readers… Just comment below (using your real email address) and you’ll be entered to win a night of pure music joy.

And be sure to check out NYCtaper’s live recordings of Oh Land‘s Brooklyn Bowl performance if you need some convincing.

Ticket Giveaway: The Black Angels Secret Show

c/o Alexandra Valenti

The September 7th show is so secret, we don’t even know where it is yet. But here’s what we do know:

1. The Black Angels are awesome and announced a tour with Black Mountain in the fall which you can pre order tickets for until Saturday with the code “black”.

2. The band also just launched an official pre-order of Phosphene Dream on their website, which includes a Deluxe Edition that comes with a signed lithograph poster and a Black Angels hoodie, the instant download of “Bad Vibrations” and “Telephone”, and to be delivered on streetdate, the full digital album in high quality, the CD and 180 gram double vinyl.

3. The secret show will be somewhere downtown, but not at a venue. There will be free drinks, and a full set from the band. Which means we’ll be there, and we’ll be drunk, doing our best impression of a Beatles fan.

4. Obviously, we have a pair of tickets for one lucky reader– just comment below about where you think the show may be and why you deserve to be there and those tickets might be yours, along with a nifty Black Angels poster.

Ticket Giveaway: Clinic at Joe's Pub

Last night, Clinic took the stage at Brooklyn’s Bell House with their usual literal band name manifestation with surgeon masks and bummed out tunes. Actually, the Village Voice eloquently coined them the Boys of Bummer recently, so I’ll be sticking with that.

Bubblegum, Clinic’s newest and sixth studio endeavour, has the usual suspects– ringing boom-clicks, lo-fi haze, and the psych pop sounds we’ve come to expect from the masked musicians who make note of their own “tacky pun”. Listening to the newest release reminds us how good the previous five were– locked up in our rooms listening to each along with Radiohead and the Flaming Lips, respectively. But Bubblegum doesn’t leave a bad taste in our mouths, one that is longing for the discontinued flavor, it instead induces a feeling of reminiscence in the current tracks. Besides, this may be where all our favorite Pitchfork bands stole their sound.

If you’d like to know the dynamic feeling of nostalgia for the present, comment below for your chance to win a pair of tickets to Clinic’s Joe’s Pub show for you and a friend.

And while you think of something witty to say, head on over after the jump to check out the video for the newest single, “I’m Aware”, from Bubblegum which is due out on Domino Records on October 5th.
