Burning is a live film that was shot in early 2009 over the course of Mogwai‘s 3 sold out nights at Music Hall of Williamsburg by Nathanaël La Souanec and Vincent Moon, best known for La Blogotheque’s stunning Take Away Shows. There will be a screening of the film at the same venue it was shot next Tuesday night in celebration of the film’s release along with Mogwai’s newest full length, Special Moves, available on that same day, August 24th.
We have a pair of tickets to see Burning on the big screen for one lucky reader. Just comment below (using your real email address) and it could be you!
Hailing from noise and experimental haven Leigh Valley, PA, Soars is awash with a beautiful sadness, captured eloquently by the hazy floating vocal of who most will assume is Briana Edwards. But the band is having fun with this for now, and haven’t confirmed their lead singer just yet as a sort of social experiment in what makes an ass out of u and me– although we have it on good authority that it’s Chris Giordani.
The first single, “Throw Yourself Apart“ delivers its promising title by referencing sounds of the Cocteau Twins, while traveling along barefoot on its own high grass landscape– and the rest of Soars’ debut unfolds onto itself forming layers of seemingly tufted sound. A heavy industrial drum follows on “Escape On High”, bringing you back to teenage depression with ease, slowly moping around with arms limp for no particular reason.
It’s a record that would be inappropriate for guests, and not recommended for dinner party atmosphere… unless, of course, you and all your friends wear black lipstick. Yet with all the heavy-hearted drone, there are glimmers of hope with slightly more upbeat tunes like “Ditches” and “Young Adult”, but Soars never stray from shifty guitar and dazed vocals. They’re not to be missed at their first NYC show with The Golden Filter, Glasser, and How To Dress Well at Glasslands on Friday, August 13th.
And since we’re in a giveaway mood, we’ve got a pair of tickets for one lucky reader. Just comment below using your real email address so we can contact you when you win!
In support of their recently released debut album, Maps & Atlases will be playing two shows in NYC this week– the first on Thursday at Mercury Lounge and then at Brooklyn’s Knitting Factory on Friday. We have a pair of tickets for y’all but more on that in a bit…
Perch Patchwork is a stunning array of folk viva voce, “a Latin phrase literally meaning with living voice”, with the backing of a big sound that swells in choral waves. And these songs do live, with unavoidable imagery of marching bands, lazy Sundays, and Caribbean dance parties (maybe). Maps & Atlases sound is hard to put your finger on, drifting in and out of mopey longing to hooks filled with echoing hope. They’re definitely a band to keep an eye on, as we can probably expect greater things from them with seasoning.
Check out their Big Ugly Yellow Couch session after the jump, and comment below for your chance to win a pair of tickets to the Brooklyn show. Happy listening… and good luck.

Dudes, if you’re not listening to Twin Shadow, I don’t even know how to explain how disappointed I am with you. The moniker of Bushwick’s well-dressed George Lewis Jr., Twin Shadow’s debut album has been literally spinning on repeat on every possible audio device in my apartment. Forget is a seamless blend of smooth lust infused vocals, synth lullabies, and whispering drum beats, not to mention “I Can’t Wait” induces heartfelt Molly Ringwald dances like woah.
Unfortunately for you, Terrible Records isn’t releasing this lovely gem until September 28th– giving you plenty of time to long for June once again. Seriously though, I can’t stop listening to these new wave jazz sounds that make me want to “secret handshake” in white linens. Mr. Lewis, I hope this stuff is getting you laid.
So if you’re looking to dance and make sexy time, check out Twin Shadow with our faves Hooray for Earth at Coco66 this Friday… or just win a pair of tickets for you and a friend by commenting below (and using your real email) about how you may or may not ooze sex just like this man’s chest hair.
This Friday night, Weezer’s playing the Williamsburg Waterfront with AWOLNATION and Rival School. It’s gonna be nice out! Like, 93 degrees and sunny nice. But here’s the thing: tickets are $54.
Luckily for you guys, some reps from AWOLNATION hit us up and are offering a pair of tickets for our readers.
As the follow up to Glory Hope Mountian, a concept album focusing on the life of frontman Rolf Klausener’s mother, The Acorn‘s No Ghost equally echoes the intimate boom of folk and frenzy of romantic classic Southern rock roots. In this case, though, it’s the far North that has inspired this mix of acoustic and electric sounds that are able to hold up to a wide array of celebration– candlelit dinners, frolicking through the backwoods of the Québécois cottage the album was recorded in, or speeding below ground in large tin cans marked by numbers and letters.
With three upcoming shows in the NYC area, it would be ill-advised to miss these boys. Heck, I say make the trip to Hoboken if you have to. But since we have a soft spot for Takka Takka, we’re giving away a pair of tickets to The Acorn’s final night in town before they head back to dear ‘ole Canada.
I don’t think I need to do much convincing for you to head over to our Twitter page and enter in this contest. Just watch the dreamy video for “You Saved My Life” to remind yourself how much you love Cass McCombs. And once you you do that, tweet this (it’s as easy as copy & paste):
I love @freedubya but I’d love them more if they gave me Cass McCombs & Lightspeed Champion tickets!
This is one of the few shows Lightspeed Champion will play with a full band this year, so it should be a real treat. Check out the video for “Marlene” after the jump.
