Or check out the tour dates after the jump if you find yourslef outside of wonderful NY in the next few weeks…
Seattle’s Grand Archives put out their newest, Keep In Mind Frankenstein, last month after grappling with a serious case of writer’s block in the studio, namely on standout track “Oslo Novelist”. But once the music was laid down, the words just fell into place, and thank goodness. This orchestral and slightly weepy (read: Pacific Northwest) version of a classic southern saloon resonance, is sure to warm your bones.
Since it’s starting to get chilly, we’d like to think we’re in the business of making our readers happy– so we’ve got two pairs of tickets to see Grand Archives, tonight at Le Poisson Rouge and tomorrow night at Southpaw. Holler at us on twitter with this message:
RT @freedubya Win tickets to see Seattle’s Grand Archives TONIGHT @lprnyc or TOMORROW at Southpaw. Simply RT to Win!
OR hit us up on the contest’s Facebook thread! Update: WE HAVE WINNERS!
Read it and weep– this is the last Yo La Tengo show in the greater NY area this year (looks like the Hanukkah shows at Maxwell’s aren’t happening).
But have no fear, our dear readers. One of you lucky folks will win a pair of tickets for tomorrow night’s Roseland extravaganza. Not only are the Black Lips opening, but you’ve got John Oliver of The Daily Show as MC, not to mention the fabulous Gary Panter (who created the lovely B&W flyer) with a (get this!) light show. And we thought On Ice was dead!? If you haven’t gotten your hands on Yo La’s newest release, Popular Songs, you’re seriously slacking.
How do you enter to win, you ask? Well, just hit us up on Twitter @freedubya with an I <3 Yo La Tengo!, and those tickets could be yours! Tweet away, my lovelies.
Cale Parks, the genius drummer boy behind indie faves Aloha and White Williams, has been doing the solo thing and we just can’t get enough. The newest EP, To Swift Mars, has been playing soundtrack to our dreamy (read: make believe) summertime love affairs with bike messengers. I got a chance to catch up with Greenpoint’s own Parks about his love for synth sound, Broadcast, and Brooklyn– so keep your eye out for the interview in the next few days.
Recently coming off tour with Passion Pit, Cale kicks off his next tour with Lemonade at Santos Party House on August 18th, and we’ve got a pair of tickets for one lucky reader!
You know the drill, follow @freedubya on Twitter, and RT the contest tweet or hit us up with a #freedubyaCP hashtag.
Debut album BiRd-BrAiNs, out August 18th on 4AD, is the singular musical project of New England native Merrill Garbus, a.k.a tUnE-yArDs. Merril’s ukulele brings forth a timid quality that can only be captured by the word endearing. In a Kimya Dawson-esque language, her somewhat awkward femininity blazes forward with a lonesome confidence.
The work is best described by Garbus herself as ‚”a patchwork of sound snippets, of history in a present tense. It is a composer’s commitment to the preservation of stories, however small and unassuming.”– self recorded on a handheld digital voice recorder and produced on free mixing software, with echoing drum loops and siren vocals.
We’ve got a copy of this Limited Edition Screen Printed DIY gem for TWO LUCKY READERS! Simply comment on the tUnE-yArDs thread on our Facebook page and you can become just as obsessed as I have…
Recently coming off tour with sound pioneers Micachu & The Shapes, tUnE-yArDs will be making a pit stop at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Sept 5th with troubadour Phosphorescent, before hitting up the UK with the lovely Dirty Projectors. GO COMMENT IT UP ON OUR FACEBOOK TO WIN!
Leonard Cohen recently announced that he’s extending his 2009 world tour and will be returning this fall to play 15 more U.S. dates. He’ll be in New York City at MSG on October 23rd, and tickets will go on sale August 10. Fans will tell you that seeing the acclaimed singer/songwriter/poet perform is an unforgettable experience – but it also takes a toll on your wallet (tickets usually cost about $100 or more a piece).
Fortunately, AEG Live and FREEwilliamsburg are giving away a pair of the highly coveted tickets to one of our lucky Twitter followers (if you aren’t part of our crew yet, follow @freedubyahere). Just send us a tweet or a RT with the hashtag #FreedubyaLC. We’ll randomly select a winner a week from today, on August 7. Good luck!
Ok, do you see the tinyness these guys call their practice space here in good ol’ Williamsburg!? So the vocals aren’t the best in the video, but these guys are booming with energy live– especially on stand out track “MR2″.
Download the self titled EP for absolutely $0 on the Miracles of Modern Science website, and you’ll be blown away. You know the deal– Follow us on twitter and RT for a chance to win a pair of tickets to this Saturday’s show at Le Poisson Rouge for The Albertans CD Release Party.
