132 North 5th St. Building Flyer: "Hello, I am an Asshole!"

A resident threw a party on the roof of 132 North 5th Street, leaving beer cans and some garbage throughout the public space. Another resident, fuming out the nostrils as he or she bent over the xerox machine, printed out enough flyers to cover all floors of the bulding calling the original partier (OP) an asshole. OP responded by scribbling on the flyer, “I only had a few people over + cleaned up most of it. Poster writer = king douche.”

Curious Residents off Graham Avenue See "Culture," Act Puzzled

FW_CONOPARADE.jpg

Having lost a number of recent battles to the Hasids, are hipsters refocusing their ire? Times, take us to the front lines!

For decades, the faithful who lived in the wood-frame houses along the route of an Italian enclave in North Williamsburg, Brooklyn, knew their duty during the area’s many religious processions. As the elaborately carved statues would approach, they darted out to the street to pay their respects or to join the procession. Today, another ritual has emerged: curious hipsters whipping out cellphones to take a snapshot.

Goddamn you hipsters with your Razr phones and your poor choice of quotes said to reporters at city-wide publications. Ten bucks says the reporter for the Times got the idea for the whole article upon hearing this quote: “There was one float and a horrible marching band. It was very ironic. The Latino parades are more festive.”

Yeasayer Opens The Beach at Governors Island: Lines, Boats, and Coconuts

FW_YEASAYER_GOVERNORS2.jpg

photo via mybrokenmouth on flickr

Yeasayer kicked off their summer-through-fall 2010 tour opening The Beach at Governors Island Saturday night. The music was fantastic, as expected (Yeasayer setlist). The logistics of getting thousands of sweaty hipsters out to an island accessible only by boat, on the other hand, were insane. Kudos to Bowery Presents, Highline Ballroom and Mad Dog Present for even trying, and thanks for keeping the taxis and music free.

It all started with a very long line, as such things do, that spanned from the gates of the Water Taxi building allll the wayyyy to Battery Park. Almost everyone behind me never even made it to the show as the island hit capacity about ten minutes after 7:00pm. The spot itself is awesome — right there on the Governors Island “beach” overlooking the East River and NYC skyline. Best of all, they have dayglo fake palm trees.

Opening bands Keepaway and Delicate Steve were the openers, Yeasayer the main event. All rocked it solidly, but let’s talk logistics, after the jump. In the meantime, here’s Yeasayer performing O.N.E., via eyots:

Hipster NYC Bicyclists Appear on Judge Judy

FW_JUDGEJUDYHIPSTERS.jpg
Two tattoo’d NYC bike messengers went before Judge Judy to argue over a lost (or stolen & sold) bicycle. This clip has all the important markings — flannels, tattoos, fire, a “friend’s band,” the internet, custom bikes, and fashionable hair. It truly is the biggest thing to hit our judicial system.
The Plaintiff, Christopher Villanella, believes his former roommate John Foraker sold his custom bicycle for money. The bike was built by Velo Brooklyn (1342 Dekalb Avenue), and he paid almost $2,000 for it.
The banter between Judge Judy and her Bailiff Petri Hawkins-Byrd about bicycle prices is a particular highlight. Watch the whole clip after the jump.

Coming soon: FREErosendale?

Picture_from_railbridge2.jpgThe New York Times ran a trend piece yesterday on a pioneering population of hipsters who have chosen to live their fringe lifestyle in more the geographic sense. The story goes: settling young artist types, who used to take root in Williamsburg for its low rent-to-space ratio, have started falling even farther from the Big Apple [tree]. Rosendale, NY, just 90 miles north, sounds like it has everything an emigrant from the borough could want: a cafe/nightclub with an “eclectic menu” and a “Brooklyn feel”, copies of The Brooklyn Rail, and the occasional Maggie Gyllenhaal sighting. Williamsburg expats may feel right at home in Rosendale, which ‚”lacks a supermarket but has a surprising number of restaurants ‚Äî four on Main Street alone, including the¬†Rosendale Cafe, a stalwart¬†vegetarian¬†and folk-music institution.”
So hipsters are getting out of town! For the internet’s sake, I hope this rural hipster migration is real because ‚”hicksters” is just too appropriate of a neologism to go unused.
Pictured- the new “just over the river,” from the town of Rosendale’s website.

Time-traveling Hipster Caught in 1940 Photo?

FW_TIMETRAVELHIPSTER.jpg
The above photo was taken in 1940 and is currently on display at a Canadian museum. In it, the viewer can see scores of 1940-era gents and ladies, in their sassy fedora hats, classy suits and ties, and then, right there about three people deep, that dude.
What’s his deal? Is that a digital SLR he’s got just below his screen-printed tee? That face. His emotions are way to “meh” here compared to the others in the photograph. To the analysis!

Breukelen: A Short Documentary

From LA-based Kitsune Noir:

I have never been to Brooklyn, but in my mind it possesses an almost mythic status and encapsulates everything that is holistically artistic, effortlessly cool and divergent from the mainstream. In his short film/documentary ‚”Breukelen”, ‚”Afropean” filmmaker Ofa brings to life the Brooklyn of my imagination.

One important question, though… Where are all the hipsters?

Bushwick Ninja Anarchists Making Real Anarchists Look Bad

FW_ninjabro.jpg
Over on the anarchist forums, anonymous commenters are furiously debating the actions of the Williamsburg Bubble Tea Ninjas. One writes:

Looks like it [ed: Williamsburg] needed a little broken glass around the place, too clean and liberal smugville, the broken glass glitters beautifully at night in the headlights, or at sunrise as the slanting rays of the sun remind us that nothing is permanent.

Many over there do however believe it was a terrible move by the anarchist ninjas, as they’re making real anarchists look like stupid, violent, nihilistic and irrational ninja anarchists. Which they totally aren’t! One writes, you ninjas shouldn’t be attacking quaint little boutiques, storefronts, and normal people cars, but the system.

Attack the rich, attack banks, attack the RULING CLASS not yuppies or hipsters. it might not be as easy, because they usually don’t just park their cars on the street, and they usually have security guard stations and don’t run boutiques but multinational corporations.

Quite the debate going on over there, where everyone is “anon” and forever temporarily unidentified in that damn system of Google Cache. Fight the power, anarchists, friends of the hipsters.

Stephen Colbert Tips His Hat to Hipsters

Hipsters got a Tip of Stephen Colbert’s hat last night, “because as a demographic they are consistently not filling out Obama’s census.” Yep, he heard about it on NPR. As you know by now, it’s not neccessarily the Hipsters fault. Still, well played by Sir Colbert, who noted the low return rates are part of a grand hipster scheme to get less representation, and therefore less neighborhood resources, which in turn will lead to a neighborhood in disrepair, lower rent, and a return to the gritty neighborhood of the 90′s.
But yes, good old Nate Stark, he of Academy Records on North 6th and source in NPR’s article saw his $5 quote replayed on Colbert, saying, “I guess it’s laziness and like, what’s the point? When it comes down to it, nobody wants to fill out like another form that’s just like getting sent to your house that really relatively has nothing to do with your life. I mean people would do if they got like five bucks.”
