Last night Turbonegro closed out this year’s free summer show series at House of Vans. With support from Night Birds and Doomriders, the Norwegians brought the house down. Their hour long set basically resembled a greatest hits potpourri with a few songs from the new album in the mix. Below is a video edit that gives you a taste of a little bit of everything. Songs included are “All My Friends Are Dead”, “Back To Dungaree High”, “I Got A Knife”, “Get It On” and “I Got Erection”.

On a related note. If you want to check out why Turbonegro loves FC St.Pauli, go to East River Bar in Williamsburg on Saturday, September 1 for the 6pm match viewing party of FC St.Pauli vs SV Sandhausen. The event is hosted by the local New York City FC St Pauli supporters group “East River Pirates“. These match viewing are usually a rowdy good time.
House of Vans continued their 2012 run of free shows last night with a swinging bill of classic hardcore/punk. Next to early 80′s legends 7 Seconds, H2O delivered the goods in a melodic and crowd pleasing fashion. Throughout both band’s sets, the packed out warehouse was full of roving circle- and mosh pits. Even though local openers, Tournament entertained with more of a heavy southern rock feel, they managed to draw the crowd’s attention just the same.
Watch video edits of all three bands below, including 7 Seconds playing their signature line song “Young ‘Til I Die” and the Nena cover, “99 Red balloons”.

House of Vans is hosting a free party this Thursday with 7 Seconds, H2O and Tournament. You can RSVP here. Given the seniority factor it seems hard to believe, but the flyer above suggests that H2O headlines over 7 Seconds.

Last night Cro-Mags, Fucked Up, Screaming Females and Pissed Jeans played a free admission show at House of Vans in Brooklyn. It was a dripping wet show all around, starting with a torrential downpour that hit a couple of thousand kids outside shortly before doors opened at 7pm. Once inside the drenched show goers were greeted by sauna like conditions. Condensation was dripping from the ceiling while a band had yet to set foot onto the stage. Corporate sponsorship or not, it was a kick ass Brooklyn style warehouse summer show. Personally, I take this over any sterile Bowery Presents event any day. Shit was raw and messy, the way these things need to be. Footage of Cro-Mags, Fucked Up and Pissed Jeans is below. Screaming Females we unfortunately missed as we had to grab a bite outside.
Joe Jonas may have won over your preteen sister, but Williamsburg hipsters are not impressed.
Last Wednesday Jonas opened for Swizz Beatz at PAPER Magazine’s “See No More” party at the House of Vans. According to a report from the Daily News,
“Jonas did not encounter very much love from the hard-core Williamsburg crowd in their frayed jeans, acid-washed tanks, jean vests and oversize eyeglass frames.
The booing and jeering began as soon as the Disney TV star and his four backup singers took to the stage …
The hostile hipsters didn’t even react when Jonas showed off his newly sculpted torso by taking off his blazer to reveal a tight tank top.”
The crowd of “hardcore” hipsters even went so far as to pelt Jonas and his back up dancers with Nerf basketballs handed out for free at the event.
However; Alexis Swerdloff at PAPER refuted the News’s account, telling Gothamist,
“As someone who was standing in the middle of the crowd during the entire performance, I can say that yes, there were a few balls thrown onto the stage—but they were promotional balls that were being thrown around all night—and that Joe was hardly met with stony silence! Rabid fans lined up around the block hours before the performance and were screaming throughout.”
Whichever version of events you believe, this discrepancy begs the question of whether anyone is actually immune to a teen heartthrob’s puppy dog eyes and choreographed dance moves after all.
Shows on August 18 and August 25 still to be announced.
House of Vans is located at 25 Franklin Street in Greenpoint. All shows are free with RSVP. However, get there early as the venue has limited capacity and entry is on a first-come, first-served basis. Lineups begin at 5:00PM.
