We still have to wait awhile to hear Toro y Moi’s followup to 2010′s Causers of This, but in the meantime, he’s got a mixtape:
Toro y Moi is a bit of a hero here at FACT, and not just for his music. The filter-heavy, daydreamed pop music of last year’s Causers of This found him grouped in with the “chillwave” sect of post-Ariel Pink bedroom artists, but whereas most of his contemporaries revel in the safety of washed out, faux-Polaroid style press shots, Toro y Moi wears amazing clothes, has an awesome dog, and isn’t afraid to show it off in high definition. Fuck you tumblr, Toro’s aiming for GQ.
And as the music so far leaked from his forthcoming second album, Underneath the Pine, appears to prove, Toro’s music contains got lasting power way beyond that of trends. Recent cuts like ‘Still Sound’ and ‘New Beat’ identify him as one of the most natural songwriters to have emerged in the past few years, while recently inaugurated dance project Les Sins invites fans to meet another side of Toro; one also explored in his FACT mix, which features the likes of Motor City Drum Ensemble, Mount Kimbie and Harald Björk.

Disco bassline, fireworks, jumping on cardboard boxes – count us in! This video for “New Beat” from Toro y Moi’s upcoming Underneath the Pine is sun-drenched and looks like a ton of fun.
UPDATE: Force Field PR gave us the heads up that the video is actually a fake, released without permission… so we removed it. The real “New Beat” video will be arriving next week. Stay tuned.

When you shut your eyes and listen, this tune by FREEwilliamsburg favorite Toro y Moi is all skippy, bouncy, and happy squelchy-ness. When you open them it’s all roofies, stabbing and satanic rituals. An interesting video by Elisha Smith-Leverock and Chris Murdoch.

Last night Toro Y Moi played a sold out Cameo Gallery with openers Twin Sister and Grandchildren.
The contrast of the impending blizzard doom waiting outside and the endearing and warming stage presence of Toro Y Moi’s Chaz Bundick was further amplified by the lo-fi, mellow “beach” music of Toro Y Moi. The snow did not deter any ticket holders and Cameo (and it’s new high dive of a stage) remained full the entire night. Not without its sound hiccups, the show was a low key and oddly soothing performance with an audience who had already previously seen Toro Y Moi and were seemingly enthusiastic fans.
