The Most Blogged About Shows This Week

Kanye West

It’s refreshing (and relaxing) to talk about something other than CMJ for a change.  Not that I didn’t thoroughly enjoy myself during the all-out clusterfuck of a festival that is the “Music Marathon,” but the weight of tracking hundreds of shows, attending them, and consuming all the free booze that’s flowing over a few days borders on burdensome at some points.  I know.  Serious, SERIOUS #hipsterproblems.

I digress.  The beauty of New York City is that we’re not waiting all year to see bands.  We’re not Manchester, Tennessee or Indio, California.  Shit, we’re not even Austin, Texas (no offense.)  We ALWAYS have stuff going on.  And that’s why I’m here, no?

As I write this, Kanye West holds the bloggable gold as the most buzzed show this week in Gotham, for his FREE show tonight at Skylight at Moynihan Station.  Almost as shocking as the announcement of a free Kanye West show is that he was able to pry himself away from Kim Kardashian for more than five minutes to throw down a live set.  Apparently Kanye is a rail enthusiast.  Seems like an event Jay-Z would jump all over.  Maybe he’ll be there?

Last year’s CMJ breakthrough artist is in town for four sold out shows thanks to the fine folks at Bowery Presents; Grimes.  On Thursday and Sunday she’ll play Music Hall of Williamsburg, with weekend dates at Bowery Ballroom sandwiched in between.  I’m predicting a Terminal 5 show sometime in the spring (PS, The Weeknd plays there tomorrow and Friday), so good on you if you managed to score tickets to this four-night engagement, which features support from one of my favorite CMJ acts of THIS year, Mykkie Blanco.  Be sure to show up early.

Bowery Ballroom won’t be empty on Sunday night.  The room will be filled with lusher and more dissonant sounds (and an older crowd) from noise rock legends Swans, hot off the release of their latest dark (and I meant dark) long (and I mean long) player Seer.  If that’s not enough to push you through the turnstiles; Devendra Banhart is supporting, the first NYC set I can recall from him in some time.

If Kanye West is too smug for ya, you don’t need to leave home tonight.  2:54 are in town from the UK and are headlining Knitting Factory (also playing Mercury Lounge with Jangula tomorrow) and will be joined by Zambri and Blonds, an absolutely unreal lineup for a Wednesday night, and over on the Lower East Side, New Zealand’s latest buzzband crossover Opossom decided that CMJ wasn’t enough for him.  He plays Pianos with Big Scary, Grandchildren and Teeth & Tongue.

CMJ apparently isn’t the end of free shows either; the FILTER Microtropolis Block Party is on Friday night at Hudson River Park Pier 57, and is stacked with a solo performance by The Strokes’ Albert Hammond Jr., DFA’s latest signee (and recent My Social List interviewee) Sinkane, and the rich, attention commanding onslaught of Caveman.

Halloween isn’t until next Wednesday, so “Halloween (observed)” is basically scheduled for this weekend.  I’ll close this post with the best Halloween events:

Regal Degal, Royal Baths and Indian Rebound at The Lab; Inspectah Deck, Moon Hooch, Osekre and the Lucky Bastards, WC Kids at Cheap Storage; CLUB HELL with Fatima Al Qadiri, Nguzunguzu, Total Freedom, Venus XTC, $hayne and J-Cush at Knockdown Center; and Haunted Hop! With Jonathan Toubin at Brooklyn Bowl
